Arbworks was founded in Bolton in 2019 by Matthew Smith and Wesley Hutchinson. They brought together Matthew’s arboricultural expertise and Wesley’s commercial experience to build a tree surgery business serving homeowners, businesses and organisations across Bolton and the North West.
Matthew has a degree in arboriculture and 22 years of industry experience. Early in his career, he worked across Europe before returning to the UK and establishing Apex Tree Surgery. He later joined forces with Wesley to create ARBworks North West Ltd. Wesley brought the commercial knowledge needed to develop the business and build long-term relationships with clients and partners.
Together, they have grown Arbworks into one of Bolton’s leading tree surgery businesses. Its team undertakes tree pruning, tree removal, planting, hedge maintenance and site clearance, from domestic jobs to larger commercial projects. Arbworks has also worked with Bolton Council and Glendale on contracts serving the local community.
A milestone came in the 2023/24 season, when Arbworks became Bolton Wanderers’ official back of shirt partner. For a business founded in Bolton, seeing the Arbworks name on the team’s shirts was a proud moment. The partnership helped introduce the business to more people across the town and reflected Matthew and Wesley’s commitment to supporting their local community.
In 2026, Arbworks won the Environmental/Sustainability Award at the Bolton News Business Awards. The recognition marks another step in the company’s growth and reflects its belief that responsible working practices matter in tree care.
Bolton remains at the heart of Arbworks. As the business continues to serve customers throughout the North West, Matthew, Wesley and the team remain committed to doing good work, earning trust and contributing to the wider community.
